Green design is the inclusion of practices, designs, and materials in construction projects. For example:
- Use sustainable framing materials
- Install airtight windows
- Seal house with foam insulation
- Re-use existing materials (housing structure, cabinets, flooring, etc)
- Design to utilize natural lighting
- Select high-efficiency appliances (dishwasher, laundry, water heater)
- Install low-flow fixtures for sink, toilet, and shower
- Use low VoC paints
- Minimize construction waste

Want to live a greener lifestyle? Here are just a few suggestions for how to be green:
- Turn off lights when you are not in the room
- Turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth
- Recycle cans, bottles, and newspapers
- Buy environmentally friendly products
- Buy EnergyStar appliances
- Use natural cleaners such as vinegar and baking soda
- Use low VoC paints
- Turn your water heater down a couple of degrees
- Install a programmable thermostat
- Minimize trips to the grocery to save on gasoline consumption
- Buy in bulk (usually involve less packaging)
